About NCAEJ

National Council for Adult Education Journal (NCAEJ) is a publication of the Nigerian National Council for Adult Education (NNCAE). The professional body that houses the Journal was established on March 27, 1971. Its founding President was Professor Emmanuel Tugbiyele from the University of Ibadan, who later moved to the University of Lagos. The National Vice President was Professor Elijah Okedara of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Other founding members included Alhaji Gidado Muazu and Naibi Wali. Hamidu Erubu served as the first Editor of the council. Dr. J.T. Okedara, Department of Adult Education staff member at the University of Ibadan, was Council Secretary. The journal was previously called Adult Education in Nigeria Journal (ADEDIN).

Since its inception in 1971, the NNCAE has published NCAEJ, reaching up to volume 28 in 2024. In 2023, the Journal published its first online issue (Volume 27), led by Professor Kola Labayo Kazeem of the University of Benin, with Professor Cecilia Oladapo serving as Editor and Dr. Blessing Anyikwa as Assistant Editor (both from the University of Lagos). The journal has been registered with the National Library of Nigeria for a long time. The journal has an ISSN: 2536-6696.

In 2025, following the Council's official registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission, NCAEJ was further upgraded to gain more visibility and global acceptability through indexing and assignment of doi. This upgrade was led by Associate Professor Ladan Babangida of Bayero University, Kano, with Prof. Kehinde O. Kester of the University of Ibadan serving as Editor, Dr. Elizabeth Ajayi of Adekunle Ajasin University as Assistant Editor and Prof. Mbalisi Onyeka Festus as National Secretary.

Aim and Objectives

The primary aim of NCAEJ is to publish original, scientific, and practice-oriented research that contributes to the advancement of adult and non-formal education in Nigeria and internationally. Objectives of the journal include:

  1. To generate theoretical knowledge in adult learning and education.
  2. To strengthen the link between theories and practice by publishing studies that directly impact organised learning activities, from both formal and non-formal perspectives.
  3. To foster scholarly collaboration.
  4. To inculcate reading and writing attitudes in students, teachers, lecturers and facilitators.
  5. To facilitate research efficiency by publishing quality and original articles.
  6. To facilitate coherent scholarly publications to uplift scholars’ academic profiles.

Scope of the Journal

The journal’s scope includes, but is not limited to, theoretical and empirical research in the following areas:

  1. Professionalism and personnel development in adult education and non-formal education.
  2. Adult education organisation and practices.
  3. Perspectives on formal, non-formal, and informal learning
  4. Current national and international contexts of adult educational issues.
  5. Instructional processes in adult education across various levels.
  6. Research that proposes new multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary theoretical models related to adult education and lifelong learning

Publication Schedule

NCAEJ is an annual publication usually published in September of every year. There is also a special issue to be published based on specific themes, a book of readings in honour of the former Presidents of the Council, or high-profile stakeholders of adult and non-formal education.

NCAEJ is a national, peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by the NNCAE. All articles are available for free download by students and researchers on the journal's website.

Article Type

NCAEJ accepts and publishes the following categories of articles:

Publication Charges

The journal charges a sum of thirty-five thousand naira only (₦35,000) as article processing charges (APC) for each accepted paper.

All submitted articles undergo a double-masked peer review process.
