Abstract
This paper discusses poverty as it affects adult learners’ performance in adult literacy programme, through hampering their commitment as leaners, thereby making them graduate as half-bakes. The paper was broken down into sections as; meaning of poverty, types of poverty, causes of poverty, poverty index in Niger state, poverty among adult leaners’ in Niger state, why many adult learners are poor in Niger state, effects of poverty on adult learners in Niger state. The paper was established the fact that poverty inhibit adult learner’s academic achievements, using qualitative analytical approach the paper concludes that abject poverty negates learners’ commitment to learning programme in Niger state. Therefore, the paper recommended among others that there should be provision of employment to adult learners’, addressing the banditry menace as well as the introduction and implementation of literacy loans should be provided.
